Clinton sought the Irish tax avoider Bono's advice on visas to Sinn Fein leaders
Rock star Bono has revealed that the former US President Bill Clinton once phoned him to seek his advice on whether he should give visas to Sinn Fein leaders Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams.
"Bill Clinton once rang us, because he was collecting opinions on whether he should give Martin McGuinness and Gerry Adams a visa into the United States," Contactmusic quoted him as telling rock magazine Rolling Stone.
The U2 frontman says that he was against the two leaders' entry into the country because he considered them to be the killers of many innocent people.
"I thought, 'These people have put bombs in supermarkets, and many innocent people have lost their lives,' so I said, 'No. Don't dignify them,'" he said.
Although Clinton ignored Bono's suggestions, the rocker believes that the former President was correct in his decision.
"And he said, 'But shouldn't you always talk to people?' And I said, 'Yeah, but you dignify them.' I was wrong. Clinton did exactly the right thing in talking to the Provisional IRA and other extremist elements," he told the magazine.
Bono is now urging the US Government to deal with terrorist groups in a similar manner.
"They have to do the same, in my opinion, with Hamas, and they have to do the same with Al Qaeda. You have to involve them in dialogue," he said.
Sir Bono
