One of Ireland’s biggest traditional music festivals has kicked off in Portlaoise.
The World Fleadh will commence on bank holiday Monday August 6th and run over a seven day period in a custom- built festival village in the host town of Portlaoise. The festival will comprise theatre, outdoor and large scale marquee performances, 13 céilí’s, music, song and dance master classes, workshops and demonstrations, a scheduled session trail encompassing 20 venues, world title competitions, a world food & craft fair, two festival clubs and a variety of other fringe entertainments to cater for all tastes and ages.
Headliners include some of the best traditional musicians in the business along with world names.
The world Fleadh line up includes: Katie Melua, Deacon Blue, The Proclaimers, Hothouse Flowers, Carlos Nunez, Salsa Celtica, Frankie Gavin & Hibernian Rhapsody, Mícheál Ó Súilleabháin, Orchestra & Special Guests , Cherish The Ladies, Seamus Begley & Jim Murray, Tim Edey Band, Gráda, Kilfenora Céilí Band, Johnny Reidy Céilí Band, Abbey Céilí Band, Swallow's Tail Céilí Band, Davey Céilí Band, Créde and The Wolfe Tones.
The Fleadh will also boast the largest ever scheduled Irish session trail, with venues across the midlands town taking place.
Festival Director Eric Cunningham said: “The scheduled session trail is a vital part of our programme of events as we wish to ensure that from the first day of the festival until the last, visitors to the festival have a choice of scheduled events right throughout the week. Irish traditional music is at the core of what this festival is about and if last year’s trail is anything to go by this year’s sessions will be fantastic.”
To facilitate the anticipated large numbers, a special 1,500-seater dome, a 5,000 capacity arena, an open air stage and a Festival Village was erected for the event.
In light of the recent bad weather though, organisers announced last week that many of the outdoor concerts have been moved under cover.
One of the big highlights of this year’s event is the World Fleadh Market, which will showcase a wide variety of exotic and gourmet foods, and a wide selection of international crafts.
