A letter claimed to be from the british loyalist terrorist Michael Stone to the Belfast Telegraph
Michael Stone's letter was published in the Belfast Telegraph
In the letter Loyalist Michael Stone outlined his plans to attack a crucial meeting of Stormont politicians in a letter to a Belfast newspaper.
The Belfast Telegraph believes the letter, dated 24 November, is genuine. It outlines Stone's plans to target Sinn Fein's leadership. He would, he wrote, "bluff" his way past security staff and set off a "flash bang" explosion in the large hall, the Telegraph letter claims. His targets, he said, were Sinn Fein's Gerry Adams and Martin McGuinness. In a statement on Wednesday, the Belfast Telegraph said: "We are satisfied that the letter is genuine. We have our own way of establishing that. "The letter was posted to us. We picked it up yesterday (Tuesday)."
The letter begins:
"On receiving this correspondence, I, Michael Stone will be in one of two positions. "One, I will be in police custody with the events surrounding my arrest ensuring that I spend the rest of my natural life in prison. "Two, that I am deceased... the latter in all probability as I don't intend withdrawing from my mission..."
In his letter, published in full in Wednesday's Belfast Telegraph, he outlines his plans to get into the chamber and, if Mr Adams and Mr McGuinness were not there, go to their offices in Stormont building. It also includes a list of his weapons: a large "flash bang" device, seven nail bombs, three knives, one axe and a garrotte.
The letter carried in the Telegraph also states that he believed he would probably be killed in the attack. It is signed: "For God and for Ulster" with his nickname "Flint" and his fingerprint.
In fact, Stone, 51, was arrested after his abortive attempt to enter Stormont in full view of television cameras which caught footage of two security guards wrestling what looked like a gun from him and trapping him in the doors of Parliament building. He was subsequently returned to jail, after his early release licence, granted under the Good Friday Agreement, was suspended. On Saturday at Belfast Magistrates Court, he was remanded on charges of attempting to murder five people including the two Sinn Fein leaders, two security guards and a person unknown. He was also charged with possessing an imitation firearm, articles for terrorist purposes and explosives.
When asked if they would be asking the Belfast Telegraph for the Stone letters, a spokesperson for the police said it would be "inappropriate to comment at this time".
Michael Stone was sentenced to almost 700 years in jail for six murders, three of which were committed during a lone gun and grenade attack on an IRA funeral in Belfast in 1988.
