The Republic of Ireland have been absent from the finals the longest of all the qualified sides, last competing at the 1988 competition in West Germany in what was their continental finals debut. Where we beat England 1-0 a Ray Houghton headed goal.
The 2012 UEFA EURO European Football Championship, also known as Euro 2012, will be the 14th European Football Championship for national football teams sanctioned by UEFA. The final Euro National Champions tournament will be hosted by Poland and Ukraine between 8 June and 1 July 2012.
The EURO 2012 final tournament features sixteen nations, the last European Championship to do so as, from Euro 2016 onward, there will be 24 finalists.

The sixteen finalists who will participate in the final tournament are:
Croatia - Czech Republic - Denmark - England - France - Germany - Greece - Italy - Netherlands - Poland (co-hosts) Portugal - Republic of Ireland - Russia - Spain (Holders) Sweden - Ukraine (co-hosts)
Qualification was contested by 51 nations between August 2010 and November 2011 to join the two host nations in the tournament.
The winner of the tournament gains automatic entry to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup hosted by Brazil.

GROUP A: Poland, Czech Republic, Greece, Russia,
GROUP B: Netherlands, Denmark, Portugal, Germany.
GROUP C: Spain, Republic of Ireland, Croatia, Italy.
GROUP D: Ukraine, France, Sweden, England
Ireland will play Croatia first. The first game will be Sunday 10 June in Poznan.
Ireland's second game will be against Spain on 14 June in Gdansk.
Italy will be final match in Ireland's group.
