Senator ‘needs help’ says rape case victim Barbara Naughton

Horrified rape survivor Barbara Naughton has blasted Senator David Norris over his pleas for clemency for his paedophile ex-lover, saying ‘He needs help and is in denial’.

Barbara, 32, was at the centre of a political storm in 2002 when former Fianna Fáil TD Bobby Molloy was forced to resign after trying to intervene in her father’s rape trial.

The young woman waived her right to anonymity to speak out about the ex-Galway Housing Minister’s shocking approach to the trial judge in her case.

Speaking last night, Barbara from Cinn Mhara, Co Galway said Norris’s ‘appalling’ actions are no different to what she experienced with Mr Molloy.

‘Remaining in a relationship with someone who is a convicted paedophile is just insane’ she said. ‘He must have reached a point where he just stopped thinking.

‘He refused to believe what his ex really did, and so he remained in the situation. He must be co-dependent and in denial, he needs help. Someone needs to explain to him how wrong his actions were.

‘He did what Bobby Molloy did, he threw the person who was abused out of the picture and overshadowed their horrific story.’

Last weekend it emerged that in 1997 Norris wrote letters to the Israeli courts pleading with them not to jail his then-partner Ezra Yitzhak Nawi after his conviction for the statutory rape of a 15-year-old Palestinian boy. On Tuesday Senator Norris announced he was withdrawing from the presidential race. ‘He did the right thing’ said Barbara. ‘Anyone who works in Government should know making representations on behalf of paedophiles and rapists should not be done.'
