Galway airport could close, says chief
The managing director of Galway Airport, Joe Walsh, says there is a real risk of the facilities closing down.
The managing director of Galway Airport, Joe Walsh, says there is a real risk of the facilities closing down because of a Government decision to end state funding for the airport from the end of the year.
He also accused the Government of a lack of joined up thinking in dealing with the regional airline industry. Sligo Airport is also to lose its state subvention but its managing director, Joe Corcoran, said he was confident it would survive.
The Minister for Transport, Leo Varadkar, has decided to provide almost €6m in additional state funding this year to six regional airports including Galway and Sligo.
Mr Varadkar said the Government decision was based on consolidating the strengths of Donegal, Knock, Kerry and Waterford

There are five reasons we must save the airport:
• Galway Airport enables the IDA, Enterprise Ireland, and Udarás na Gaeltachta to sell Galway more easily for new business. Galway is currently the third largest employer in the country. Not having an airport is an obstacle
• 82% of indigenous and multi-national companies stated that Galway Airport is ‘essential’ to their business. 22,000 jobs rely indirectly on our airport
• Galway Airport means connectivity to international markets in Europe and beyond. Connectivity is key to exports, the type of business we need to grow our economy and our region
• Galway Airport is worth €31 million to the region
• 175 jobs at the airport equates to €2.1 million in direct taxes to the Government. Ironically, almost the same amount that is needed to keep the airport operational!
Ironic when they have tried their best in opposition that it will be Fine Gael to have to pull the plug.
