I hope this is not just a Dublin Cork route plan and ignore the rest of Ireland rail travel. I might book a journey by Rail to County Clare if the fares are now the cheapest mode of travel.

The Dublin to Cork routes is very competitive with several very cheap ways to make the journey. Ryanair offer one way cheapest flights for just €10 and that includes all taxes and charges. You can travel from Cork to Dublin, Dublin Cork by coach and bus and fares are very cheap, book for under €20 return.
Also last year the road journey by car was improved by the opening of the M7 and M8 motorway link. Car travel time between Dublin and Cork was reduced by up to 45 minutes at peak times.

Irish Rail passengers can now get bargain fares in a new online marketing campaign. The Irish rail online booking service has drawn comparisons to the cheapest flights offered by Ryanair in Ireland

In the past Irish Rail had set fare costs for train journeys in Ireland regardless of when a person booked.
Now, the further in advance customers book their rail journey with Irish Rail, the cheaper fares costs.
Iris rail is also introducing zero or €1 fares on the Cork to Dublin route.

Irish Rail spokesman Barry Kenny said the further in advance a customer books, the better the chance of a discount fare being available. This means customers will be paying more for last-minute rail journeys, as is the case with airlines.
"The way in which we discount is now changing. Previously, we tended to have a set fare per train. For example, a specific train was €10 regardless if it was booked four weeks ahead or the day before travel. We are changing over to the method more commonly used in transport, which is that the fare varies in accordance with demand," he said.
The introduction of zero fares is also something that Mr Kenny advised to "watch this space" on.

Irish Rail travel can be very comfortable, a lot of the trains are modern rolling stock. Plenty of leg room, lots of room for luggage and the Irish rail trains are very quiet.
This Irish Rail Dublin Cork offer should compete well with even the cheapest of Ryanair fares, not everyone likes to fly and many more do not enjoy all the waiting around, the hassle of the check in times at airports.
