Dis country is d bad joke.
LAST Thursday, August 26 , was a day I will never forget, and one of such sadness. We are a menswear shop and have been trading in Newcastle West, Co Limerick, since 1889 and we have no option but to close down.
The Closing Down signs I put up sum up how badly our country has fallen apart -- we have no vision, no focus and certainly no leadership. It is with much regret that Murphy & Son Menswear is closing down after 121 years of trading.
I have been in the menswear trade all my life, from Bests in Dublin to David Jones in Australia. It was two-and-a-half years ago that I returned to Ireland from Australia with my wife and three children to take over the family business.
Unfortunately, our timing couldn't have been worse and now we're in the unfortunate position of closing down. I knew it would be difficult, especially for my father, Michael Murphy, who ran the business for 52 years.
However, I never expected the level of sadness and regret I now feel.
The number of saddened customers and former staff who have been coming into the store since we announced our closure has been overwhelming .
Thank you so much to all the customers who have supported Murphy & Son over the past four generations.
I so much wanted to build on our great history and to hand the business to my kids, but have found myself in the position of no longer being able to support my family.
The Government needs to now stand up and take serious action to give us some hope. We have a great country. Unfortunately, I now have to leave it again in order to make a life for my family in Australia -- at least we have that option and I'm thankful for it.
Many businesses are closing down because they see no future. Wake up, government -- and quickly.
Declan Murphy
