Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     Irish hotel rates cheapest since 1999

Staying at Irish hotels has never been cheaper ...at least not since 1999. Irish hotel room rates are now at ....last century prices.
It is quite sad that the ....good Irish family hotels ....are paying for the greed of others in the hotel industry.
The average rate quoted of €77.81 ...is on the high side of what is widely available. This weeks Sunday Business Post claimed ...the average Irish hotel room rate was down to €61.
My recent experience around Ireland suggests €50 as a general rate ...go upwards from there ...according to specific need and date.

Hotel rates 'back at 1999 levels'
A report on the Irish hotel sector has found that profits in the industry have fallen by 50% since 2007, while room rates have dropped back to 1999 levels.
The report by consultants Horwath Bastow Charleton, which covered 2009, says the hotel sector is now in a very unstable position, with profit levels at many hotels not enough to re-pay their bank loans.
It says the average room rate in the Republic of Ireland last year was €77.81, down 20% from 2007. Horwath Bastow Charleton says the average rate has fallen by another 10% in the first six months of this year.
The consultants quote Central Bank figures showing that the hotel industry owed €6.4 billion at the end of last year. The report says more than 40% of Irish hotel rooms, or 25,000, were developed over the last 10 years. Horwath Bastow Charleton estimates that the average debt per room of these hotels is around €135,000.
The report says the newly-developed four and five star resort market has been hit hardest by the downturn, as the costs of developing such hotels were extremely high - especially if they included extras such as golf courses.
But the report says the average room rate in Dublin hotels is €16 higher than elsewhere, and room occupancy is 10% higher.
Howath Bastow Charleton estimates that around 30 hotels are currently in the hands of administrators.

Average price of hotel room drops to €61
By Nicola Cooke
Thousands of unwanted hotel rooms have driven down the average price of a room to just €61 per night, the Irish Hotels Federation (IHF) has revealed.

John Power, the federation’s president, said hotels were struggling to retain 2009 room rates and that prices were continuing to drop.

‘‘The competition from receiver run hotels is causing a lot of problems.

We can’t afford to drop below an average capacity of 50 per cent - which we are currently at," he said.

He said that capacity in hotels remained flat and was at between 50 and 55 per cent, and there was a trend of higher numbers of people staying in the same room.

This, he said, suggested that families were availing of value deals.

‘‘The average room price is even struggling to keep up with last year’s rates," said Power. Fáilte Ireland/Millward Brown research shows that four in five families in Ireland are likely to take a holiday in Ireland this year.

But Irish Self Catering Federation chairman John O’Carroll said the pattern of last minute booking remained.

‘‘You can get a house that sleeps six for €15 per person per night, and many have discounts with local eateries or activities," he said.

‘‘Supermarket food has never been cheaper either.

There was an overdevelopment of holiday homes in recent years - and while I expect those in places with lots to do to prosper this summer - those with no facilities will not."
