TV Channels across Ireland

I know that we can all pick up the main UK TV channels ...
Picking up BBC 1 and 2 ...ITV ....Channel 4 ...signals through the existing analogue format via terrestrial aerials ....has always been very straightforward.
What is your success with the new digital services ....free to Air and Freeview services. This seems to be far more hit and miss.

Was anyone able to pick up the RTE test signals from .... Clermont Carn, County Louth and Three Rock, County Dublin.
I understand that one of the key decisions from the trial was ....a decision to use MPEG 4 as the compression technology for all future national and commercial Irish DTT services.
If I understand the implications correctly ...then this decision by RTE will cause some concerns and costs for most of us ...this is because the UK use a MPEG 2 format ....and most of our TV sets ....are scale of economy sourced from the UK.
So ...does this mean that most of our current TV sets ...including ones purchased as recent as today ....as digitial ...will not be able to pick up RTE digital ...not without the additional costs of a MPEG4 Digital box.
Damo ...I would like your opinion ....is my understanding correct.
