Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     MAY DAY

Just thought I'd share trivia with ye all this fine sunny May Day.
In honor of a wedding I will be attending tomorrow afternoon. Now the groom is 5/6 generation VERY Catholic Irish American but, his wee bride is not and tis sure she has no clue as to just all it will mean for her. He is a Scanlon and their family is ruled by the grand parents - and tis a known fact in these here parts - that what they say goes or tis hell to pay.

Although, as an O'Connor and a wee mere guest to this delightful occassion I will hold me Irish tongue and not breathe a word of the auld Irish saying,

MARRY IN MAY AND RUE THE DAY

I only hope it does not ring true for this young couple and she is with irsh child as well.

I really liked this custom and found it entertaining and brought a chuckle:
The groom is invited to the bride's house right before the wedding and they cooked a goose in his honor. It was called 'Aitin' the gander and it has to be where we get the expression "his goose is cooked'!

Also - The Lucky Horseshoe:
Irish brides used to carry a real horseshoe for good luck (with the points turned up so the luck won't run out). Today they carry a horseshoe made of porcelain or fabric.

I love this stuff. Hope it brought a smile to all on this beautiful day.
