a dublin family that has been growing vegetables for 200 years is bringing blue potatoes to the irish market, to coincide with the international year of the potato.
peter keogh &sons, which trades as cream of the crop, has launched the heritage 'blue' potatoes, from its farm in oldtown in north dublin. the family has reintroduced several varieties of potato that were common in ireland in the 18th and 19th centuries.
the blue potatoes were first grown in scotland in the 1900s and are a deep indigo blue in colour, with dark purple skin. the blue colour comes from the presence of anthocyanin, which is an antioxidant. tom keogh, general manager of the firm, said the potatoes had health benefits and the novelty colour could make potatoes more appealing to children. the heritage blue potatoes are available in superquinn stores for a limited time.
