Does anyone watch Anthony Bourdain on the travel channel? He's a chef that travels the world. His show is a cross between a travelogue and a cooking show. I heart him. lol

If you don't watch him particularly...is anyone into cooking? If so, share your favorite recipe!! I'm looking for some new ways to cook.

I think the sharing of food and cooking tradtions is a way that all people can come together and bond. There is such a commonality to the traditions of food that are associated with family and traditions - it's a way to bond and to share cultures.

Someone (I think it was Jo) posted a boxty thread here...and I found it to be interesting in that ALL cultures offer a type of base sustenance, such as a potato pancake, or a rice cake that is a mainstay of providing for the family.

My Dad brought boxty to our family, but we called them simply "potato pancakes." The ten of us loved them...couldn't get enough.

My Dad was in the Navy towards the end of WWII, and he brought "subghum" and "gum wally" to our table from that experience. That's what the "cooks" made on board the ship he served on. lol

They were the EXACT same dish in that there was a very simple gravy made from the drippings of either a cheap steak cut, like flank steak -or a cheap ground meat like hamburger. He simply browned the meat, and then created a gravy using onions, peppers, whatever was on hand and then pouring it all over either rice or mashed potatoes. I look back and think how filling, yet tasty, that dish was! That fed the ten of us with a side of vegetables very well.

Btw - the subghum was the more "expensive" cut of meat and the "gum wally" was the hamburger. Otherwise, same dish. LOL

I still think about that, and smile.
