the origin of the limerick verse
|
|
|
i was asked if i knew where the limerick verse comes from.
i did not know the answer. my guess was, that they first started in county limerick.
i had never thought much about the origins.
even after googling i am not sure.
this is a common definition for the limerick
a limerick is a five-line poem with a strict form, originally popularized in english by edward lear. limericks are frequently witty or humorous, and sometimes obscene with humorous intent.
another
a light humorous, nonsensical, or bawdy verse of five anapestic lines usually with the rhyme scheme aabba.
suggestion my guess may have some truth
a popular form of short, humorous verse, often nonsensical and frequently ribald. it consists of five lines, rhyming aabba, and the dominant metre is anapestic, with two feet in the third and fourth lines and three feet in the others. the origin of the term is obscure, but a group of poets in county limerick, ireland., wrote limericks in irish in the 18th century.
any other origin theories?
