Sinn Fein want tougher policing in Crossmaglen

In a quite remarkable short period of time the political wing of the IRA has become a voice for law and order.
Sinn Féin MP Conor Murphy is calling for more police activity in the Irish Republican stronghold border town of Crossmaglen, in south Armagh.
Local Sinn Féin MP Conor Murphy is seeking a meeting with the new Police Service of Northern. Ireland (PSNI) to discuss what he claims is a small number of increasingly thuggish people involved in car crime and assaults.
He claims local people in Crossmaglen want more police activity to tackle the anti-social behaviour.
Crossmaglen was for decades the very image of Irish Republican resistance to British rule in any part of Ireland. The RUC had to be accompanied by heavily-armed British soldiers any time they went on a patrol. British soldiers themselves were airlifted into and out of their military bases in South Armagh.
Co-operation between the locals and former Policing service Royal Ulster Constabulary (RUC) was non existent.
