The Ligoniel Improvement Association in Belfast have said that children as young as nine in north Belfast are both taking and dealing in drugs. Maria Morgan, speaking for the Belfast community said "What we need to do is get the community to take ownership of their area and the drug problem. This is evidence that has come from community representatives in the area who the parents have approached, Obviously there is that fear of going to the police they don't want their children prosecuted, and there is that tradition that you don't go to the police."
Earlier this year it was reported that children as young as eight years old in the north of Ireland are being treated for alcohol and substance abuse. Drink, cannabis and solvents are being peddled to primary school children who are regularly misuing them. according to Raymond McKimm of the Eastern Health Board's Lifematters project. "I am currently working with a child with an entrenched problem at 11 years of age that goes back three years. Children regularly misuse cannabis, alcohol or solvents. Those who are peddling the substances don't discriminate in terms of age."
