Three Wishes

On the beach this past night
A tarnished brass lamp I did find
Picked it up in my hands
And gave it a quick shine.

At first, nothing happened.
Then a puff of smoke, a loud bang
And before me
A giant Genie stood in the sand.

“Three wishes,” he said
In a great booming voice
“But, quickly,” he intoned
Giving little time to make my choice

First and foremost, I said with conviction
I wish that this friend of mine,
Wherever he is
Is safe and unharmed and doing fine

For my next wish
I said forcefully with all my might
What I would really like
Is for this friend to see the light

In the safe little world we created
It’s easy to be your best
But we’ve been down this path already
And I think we can pass the test

My voice now barely a whisper
I told the Genie my third and final wish
To have a chance, however quick,
To tell this friend to his face my pitch.

The Genie looked at me with narrowed eyes
And shook his head with a sigh
"It’s not up to you or up to me
Only your friend can reply."

Three wishes gone and ungranted
So what more can I do or confide?
I guess it’s out of my hands now.
It’s up to you to trust me or hide.
