Personal life of Martin McGuinness.
Martin McGuinness is a fan of the Derry Gaelic football and hurling teams and played both sports when he was younger. He grew up just 50 metres from Celtic Park, the home of Derry GAA. His brother Tom McGuinness played Gaelic football for Derry and is regarded as one of the county's best ever players. Among his honors are three Ulster Senior Football Championship medals, as well as Ulster Under 21 and All-Ireland Under 21 Championship medals.
McGuinness is also a fan of Derry City FC, and is a keen fisherman.
McGuiness is a member of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, meaning that he does not drink alcohol.
Martin McGuinness The Peoples President campaign kicked off its tour of the 32 counties on September 29 with an open air rally in Derry’s Bogside.
The Bloody Sunday families led the people of the Bogside, Civil Rights veterans and Martin and his family as they made their way from the McGuinness family home to Free Derry corner. On the way they were joined by Derry City manager Stephen Kenny and the Derry GAA manager John Brennan along with captain Kevin McCloy and All Star forward Paddy Bradley.
At Free Derry corner a crowd of thousands had assembled to welcome Martin as he prepared to embark on his campaign for the Aras.
Former Hunger Striker Raymond McCartney welcomed the crowd and introduced the platform party that included Fr Michael Canny, Rev David Latimer, the Pink ladies cancer campaigners, the Bloody Sunday families, solicitor Paddy McDermott and Civil Rights leader Paddy ‘Bogside’ Doherty and his wife.
The event was chaired by Derry City Centre manager Jim Roddy.
