Irish Festival throws Celtic party
Thursday, September 08, 2011
Joan Diver of Screaming Orphans.
After all that rain this week, it should be looking nice and green down at Riverplex this weekend, where the Pittsburgh Irish Festival will celebrate its 21st birthday.
"We're finally legal this year, hitting 21," says director Nan Krushinski.
Whether you're a fan of traditional Irish ballads, rowdy jigs or fizzier Celtic pop-rock, there will be something for you.
Pittsburgh Irish Festival
Where: Riverplex, next to Sandcastle, Homestead.
When: 4 p.m. to midnight Friday; 11 a.m. to midnight Saturday; 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.
Admission: $10 adult advance, $12 at the gate; $8 senior (60+) and students with ID; $5 military active/retired and public safety officers with ID; free for children 12 years and younger; $3 admission Friday 4-6 p.m.; $5 admission Friday 6-8 p.m. with college ID. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or at www.pghirishfest.org.
"We're bringing back some of our favorites and some younger talent," Ms. Krushinski says, "with Goitse and the Colin Grant Band and Carbon Leaf, who speak to a younger, college crowd. We're honoring the different demographics that come to the festival."
Along with the music, there will be Irish food and refreshments, a marketplace, children's activities, storytelling, and dance workshops and performances.
For a historical perspective, the Irish Brigade re-enacts the experience of Irish soldiers during the Civil War, while The Irish Living History of Central Ohio demonstrates crafts, cooking and weaponry used in early medieval Ireland.
Here's a closer look at the music highlights:
Gaelic Storm: The lively steerage band from the movie "Titanic," blending Irish and Scottish sounds, has been a favorite at the festival for more than a decade.
Makem and Spain Brothers: The three sons of Irish music legend Tommy Makem -- Shane, Conor and Rory -- join forces with Mickey and Liam Spain for folk music that tells stories of the Irish people.
Goitse: The five-piece band, consisting of students of Traditional Music and Dance at the University of Limerick, debuted in January 2010, drawing raves for its traditional sound. It features fiddle player Áine McGeeney (who toured with "Lord of the Dance") and James Harvey (winner of four All Ireland Banjo titles in a row).
Colin Grant Band: Fiddle-led Celtic fusion band describes itself as "as much Steely Dan and Yes as it is Ashley Mac-Isaac."
Carbon Leaf: The Richmond, Va., band plays indie-rock with a Celtic/bluegrass flavor.
Tom Sweeney: As the grandson of Sarah Makem and the nephew of Tommy Makem, Irish balladry runs in his blood.
Screaming Orphans: Four sisters from County Donegal Ireland whose music has been compared to the Bangles and the Cranberries.
