Victor Wanyama’s long wait to pull on a Celtic shirt is set to end here in Wales tonight.
And the new Bhoy could be joined on the pitch by Croatian keeper Stipe Pletikosa as he attempts to win a deal at Parkhead.
The powerful Kenyan Wanyama – recruited in a £900,000 deal from from Belgian club Germinal Beerschot – aims to make an immediate impact.
Wanyama is so far the only player Neil Lennon has spent money on in this transfer window.
The delay in obtaining a work permit has prevented him appearing for his new club up to this point, but Lennon has revealed he has been very impressed by the 20-year-old in training at Lennoxtown since the squad returned from their three-game tour of Australia.
And the holding midfielder, who Lennon also believes can play in central defence, is expected to get the chance to show what he can do in a match situation against the Championship play-off qualifiers.
It will be a quick return to Cardiff for Adam Matthews, who joined Celtic on a Bosman in the summer, and Joe Ledley, who made the move 12 months ago, while Glenn Loovens will also be returning to his previous club.
A very interested spectator is expected to be Craig Bellamy, who spent last season on loan at Cardiff, and who is still looking for a way out of Manchester City.
But while Bellamy continues to hold out for the £80,000-per-week wage he currently earns, any hope of a return to the SPL remains massively optimistic.
Lennon has continued to widen his search for a striker to add to his options, and South African Katlego Mphela has confirmed he is on his way this weekend to Parkhead to begin a four day-trial.
The £1.5m-rated striker said: “It is not a normal situation at Sundowns for players to be allowed to go for trials. But the club made an exception for me. I believe I will do well enough to win a contract with Celtic.”
The search for another keeper is also ongoing, with reports in Poland claiming Celtic had offered a trial to three-times capped 21-year-old Grzegorz Sandomierski, but Pletikosa could steal a march on any other candidates after travelling to Wales with Lennon’s squad.
He is believed to already have had a medical and could agree a deal. However, Belgian international keeper Stijn Stijnen has also been at Lennoxtown for talks with Lennon this week.
He has now returned to Belgium and, despite reports he was unwilling to show what he can do in a trial match, Celtic believe the meeting was worthwhile.
A club spokesman said: “Stijn was at Lennoxtown for a look around at the facilities and to talk to the club. He enjoyed his visit, and we enjoyed having him.”
On the keeper search, Lennon said today: “We just want to have a look at these keepers and see what sort of attributes they have – they come highly recommended.
“They are within our budget but, ultimately, we will decide if they have the quality to come in and challenge for the No.1 spot. But from what I have seen so far, I’ve been impressed.”
