Analogue tv to be switched off next October
The analogue television network in Ireland is to be switched off in just over a year's time.
SAORVIEW
The switch-off date will be October 24, 2012 - an agreed date when the network in the North will also shut down.
Many benefits for television viewers, such as clearer picture and sound quality, more TV channels, radio channels, information services and high definition television. It will also free up space on the broadcast spectrum for other purposes including mobile and broadband services.
Around 250,000 households currently rely on an aerial to watch television and will have to make alternative arrangements including either moving to a pay television service like Sky or UPC or connecting to Saorview, the new national digital television network launched by RTE earlier this year.

SAORVIEW is owned and managed by RTE. It will carry both RTE and non-RTE channels and services. The infrastructure required to transmit the SAORVIEW service was constructed and is operated by RTENL (a wholly owned subsidiary of RTE).
Saorview is a digital terrestrial television (DTT) service which means the signal is broadcast from transmission masts across the country and is received through a standard TV aerial paired with either a set-top-box or a new integrated digital television (iDTV)
RTE recommends that consumers wishing to avail of the SAORVIEW service only purchase receivers that carry the SAORVIEW approved logo.
By October 2012 SAORVIEW should be accessible to 98% of the population. Approximately 2% of the population will not be able to receive the SAORVIEW service. RTÉ is currently in the process of developing and testing a free-to-air satellite service, SAORSAT, which will make it possible for 100% of the population to access Irish free-to-air digital television channels and services. This will provide coverage to the homes not covered by SAORVIEW.

Digitial tv only future in Ireland
Ireland's Analogue Switch Off (ASO) is when analogue television transmission in Ireland will be turned off. This will happen in late 2012.
Like the rest of Europe, North America and many other countries, television broadcasting in Ireland is switching from analogue to digital transmission.
Digital television is a major step change in broadcasting that has many advantages over analogue for TV viewers. Digital TV can offer more channels, high definition (HD) pictures and sound, on-screen programme guides and new interactive services.
