Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     Celtic FC founded 6th November 1887, winning since 1888

Happy Birthday Celtic FC and genuine Celtic fans everywhere around the world. Those Celtic Fans who have actually helped support the Club for the past 123 years.
Celtic FC Founded in 1887. Winning since 1888
Happy 123rd birthday, to The Celtic Football Club
November 6 is a special day as Celtic celebrate their 123rd birthday. The club was officially formed at a meeting in St Mary's Church hall in the Calton on this day in 1887.

Brother Walfrid, a Marist brother from Sligo who was working in the East End of Glasgow, had seen the way in which Hibernian's Scottish Cup triumph had been celebrated by the Irish community in Glasgow in 1887 and his idea was for a club to be formed in the city that would raise money to help alleviate the poverty among his community, but also give it a focus and a sense of pride.
One man's vision and a meeting at St Mary's Hall in Abercromby Street on November 6, 1887 grew far beyond the cobbled streets of the Calton and now that dream lives on in the hearts of Celtic supporters of every faith and colour, creed and race in every corner of the globe.

The new club played its first game the following year, May 28, 1888, when the new Celtic Football Club beat Rangers 5-2, with Neilly McCallum having the honour of scoring the first ever goal for the club.
The club that Brother Walfrid helped to start has grown to be one of the most famous in the world and continues to be a sense of pride to everyone who is a Celtic supporter.
Celtic have enjoyed success in Scotland, winning the league 42 times, the Scottish Cup 34 times and the League Cup 14 times. The club has also scaled the heights of Europe, winning the European Cup in 1967.
And in 2003, when the team reached the final of the UEFA Cup in Seville, over 80,000 supporters descended on the southern Spanish city in a show of support unrivaled anywhere in world football.
Brother Walfrid's vision for a club that would be a source of pride to his community has certainly come true. That community now extends all over the world. Happy 123rd birthday, Celtic.

History of Celtic F.C.
Celtic were formally founded in St. Mary's Church Hall on East Rose Street (now Forbes Street), Calton, Glasgow, by Brother Walfrid, an Irish Marist brother, on 6 November 1887. Brother Walfrid's move to establish the club as a means of fund raising for his charity, The Poor Children's Dinner Table, was largely inspired by the example of Hibernian who were formed out of the immigrant Irish population thirteen years earlier in Edinburgh, with 7 of Celtic's first eleven players signing from Hibs. Walfrid's own suggestion of the name Celtic was intended to reflect the club's Irish and Scottish origins, and was adopted at the same meeting.
The club's official nickname is "The Bhoys", which denotes an Irish pronunciation, in reflection of the club's heritage. The club's first tangible bit of evidence for their nickname is a postcard from the earliest years of the 20th century, which refers to the Celtic team of the time as "the bould bhoys", while the team were already known as the "Bold Boys" soon after the club was founded. The term "Boys" was used for most football teams of Glasgow at the time, most probably in reference to the local, sectarian, youth gangs prevalent in Glasgow at the time, most notably the (Irish) Timalloys.

On 28 May 1888, Celtic played their first official match against Rangers and won 5–2 in what was described as a "friendly encounter". During their formative years, Celtic played in a white shirt with a green collar and a red Celtic cross on the breast, then switched to green and white vertical stripes around 1890. They made the switch to their green and white hoops in 1903.
Celtic celebrate 123 years old birthday party with 9-0 victory against Aberdeen
What a way for Celtic to celebrate the 6th November, the day the club was founded.
Two hat-tricks among a 9-0 win made Celtic's win a record SPL result.
Anyone know if Finn is getting back on here, miss the chat from the Irish side of Celtic FC. He was the only other genuine supporting Celtic fan on here.
