Northern Ireland subsidized from London and Dublin.

Over 40% of Northern Ireland exports were purchased by the Republic of Ireland last year.
Northern Ireland can not survive without the goodwill and subsidy from the Republic of Ireland.
If Irish people really did stop buying anything British but claimed as Irish from NI, as kev fairly highlights. The economy of Northern Ireland would completely collapse overnight.
Irish people stop buying from NI as Irish Produce of Ireland
Jed was saying that the Exchange rate has changed, the euro is not as strong against the pound. Cross border traffic of Republic of Ireland shoppers has all but stopped. Many items are now cheaper to buy in Supermarkets in the Republic of Ireland than they are in Northern Ireland. Northern Irish shoppers are going to the Republic of Ireland to spend their money and buy fuels.
Things are very bad in England right now. Cutbacks by the Slimese twins are going to put a lot of people out of work. Northern Ireland is a target for some of the heaviest cutbacks. English people have always been unhappy about giving so much money to Northern Ireland. Now that England is broke, the people will demand the hand outs stop.
A reality check is going to hit Northern Ireland quick and very hard. It is English people who have had to pay for Northern .Ireland to exist.
Northern Ireland is subsidized by London and Dublin. All the newspapers have reported that without the finances and loans supplied like charity -- the economy of Northern Ireland would collapse overnight. Neither countries can now afford to subsidize Northern Ireland.

Our first aim is simply to draw attention to the scale of the problem heading this way.
This is a simple matter of logic. The province is more reliant on public spending than any other UK region.
It stands to reason it will be hardest hit by a one-size-fits-all approach to slashing spending.

Northern Ireland faces a steep decline in living standards as a result of public sector cuts — and its citizens should be able to choose between spending cuts or paying more for public services through higher taxes, an economist has said.
Mike Smyth said Northern Ireland was facing its gloomiest period for public expenditure in more than a generation as the province awaits to hear how next month’s comprehensive spending review will cut public services.
He said a decline in living standards would result from the cuts proposed by the Coalition Government, and said the cuts would result in a reduction in public expenditure of £1.5bn or £350m per year from 2011/2012 to 2014/2015.
“If this proves to be the case Northern Ireland faces a severe decline in living standards over the next four years, unless the private sector responds spectacularly well to fill the gap with employment. In this context, it is time for the one sided debate about public expenditure restraint — its impact on jobs, public services — to end and to consider some local tax choices.”
