Background Information
It’s hard to believe that the Temple Bar TradFest began only 4 short years ago. Since its inaugural year it has grown into one of the most anticipated events on the festival calendar. The festival has quite literally captured the heart of the city centre and found a home in the cultural playground that is Temple Bar. Organised as a non-profit venture by TASCQ, the traders’ group in Temple Bar, the festival aims to present top quality traditional music to both a domestic and international audience. With the addition of this year’s family programme, the festival has truly become an event that people can enjoy regardless of age or nationality. The festival is poised to become the biggest and best to date, with a programme that continues to grow in size and diversity the festival has had great success in opening up the world of traditional music to new audiences. Patrons of the festival have included acting powerhouses such as Stephen Rhea and Brendan Gleeson. With such endorsements behind it the festival just goes from strength to strength and as far as the organisers are concerned, the sky is the limit to what can be achieved with TradFest.
Temple Bar TradFest ’09 From Wednesday 28th Jan – Sunday Feb 1st
Excitement is building in the air as the full programme for the 4th annual Temple Bar TradFest was issued today. Due to kick off on January 28th and running until February 1st, the five day festival is packed with exciting concert performances, pub sessions, movie screenings and parades.
Speaking at the launch of the programme, Festival Patron Stephen Rea said ‘When we had nothing, when we were in the shit all we had was our music, our culture, it has always been a shining light through the dark times of the past and now we are back in the shit we still have our roots, our culture our music and I have no doubt it will continue to sustain and entertain us through whatever life throws at us’
The TradFest opening night will see Paddy, Seamus and Kevin Glackin returning back to the stage together. The Festival has a stunning line up of high calibre performers including the energetic American Trad group Solas(Thursday 29th Jan), Paddy Keenan and Tommy O’Sullivan (Thursday 29th Jan), Genticorum the power trio from Montréal and acclaimed fluting maestro Michael McGoldrick (Friday 30th Jan). The youthful mix of Seán Mc Keon and Liam O’Connor followed by the dynamic duo of Aidan O’ Donnell and Ciarán O Maonaigh is sure to create an unforgettable experience on Friday 30th Jan.
The closing concert looks set to be one particular highlight as Moya Brennan, Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh and Tríona and Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill take to the stage in the Button Factory on Sat 31st Jan. Coming together under the name “T with the Maggies” they will also perform a very special Lullaby Concert in The Ark drawing on their store of songs from the Donegal Gaeltacht.
The festival offers something for all budgets with many free events throughout the weekend. Live music sessions on the pub trail will be spread across 15 venues in Temple Bar during the festival and free movie screenings will take place daily on Meeting House Square. This year the screenings will be - Fluent Dysphasia which stars festival patron Stephen Rea and Yu Ming Is Anm Dom.
The festival has also added a craft market this year. Taking place in the Cows Lane from 11am – 3pm on Sat 31st the market will include handmade jewelry, knit wear and musical instruments.
A special children’s programme sees a proliferation of family friendly events being added to the Festival. These include piper’s performing on the street, children’s concerts in The Ark and a family parade in which young people from some of the city’s schools and youth clubs dramatize the famous myth of the Children of Lir under the direction of Down to Earth Inc Theatre Company. The parade will be followed by an outdoor Ceilí in meeting house Square with members of Comhaltas branches leading the celebration of Irish dance and music. The Tulla Ceilí band will be performing live in Meeting House Square and for a lively send off to Temple Bar TradFest
An exhibition of the works of the award winning photographer Nutan whose work in Ireland spans the last four decades, will take place throughout the festival in the gallery of photography and admission will be free.
Two very special screenings will take place in the IFI. “Bringing it all back Home” will be screened on Saturday 31st Jan at 12 o’clock followed by a public interview with the series producer Philip King conducted by Nicholas Carolan, Director of the Irish Traditional Music Archive and “From Shore to Shore” which looks at the changes and continuities which can be seen in Irish music since the turn of the last century at 12 o’ clock on Sunday 31st Jan.
This is the fourth Trad Festival which is partly sponsored by Bushmills and Dublin City Council is funded and organized by Temple Bar Traders Group, TASCQ to provide the city with a much needed boost at a time of the year when there are few events happening in Dublin. Last years event attracted over 20,000 people per day to the area, which led to an increase in local trade of 6.9% year on year.

Irish Trad
Truly feel passionate about traditional Irish music and culture.
"On its current trajectory and particularly because it is based in the capital it (Temple Bar Trad) has the potential to become the performance based traditional music festival in Ireland, perhaps someday even presenting a Dublin alternative to Celtic Connections in Glasgow"
-Journal of Music in Ireland, March 2007
Temple Bar Trad is Dublin's premier celebration of traditional music and culture. It's hard to believe that before the first ever Temple Bar Trad in January 2006, Dublin had lacked a traditional music festival for almost twenty years! Temple Bar Trad is all about the music. Each year, we try and bring some of Ireland's top traditional musicians (and sometimes a few friends from overseas as well!) to play during the festival weekend. Concerts range from small intimate affairs in the Project Arts Centre to large gala performances at The Olympia Theatre - all guaranteeing a memorable night of music! Temple Bar Trad is organised and project managed by TASCQ, the local traders group in Temple Bar as a non-profit venture. We pump every cent into presenting musicians and performances of the highest calibre at the lowest feasible ticket price, thus opening up the festival to as broad an audience as possible.
