Irish History Forum Discussion:     The Later Penal Laws

I've been reading about the Penal Laws that were latter introduced to apparently to take care of what sword and fire could not do. That was to subdue and conquer the Irish race. Edmund Burke did such a fine job at explaining it that I am including this quote:

"..a machine of wise and elaborate contrivance, as well fitted for the oppression, impoverishment, and degradation of a people, and the debasement in them of human nature itself, as ever proceeded from the perverted ingenuity of man"...

This Treaty of Limerick was of course told to be otherwise since they had to use lies and all sorts of cowardly treacherousness to gain their true but unsaid goal.... Extinguish the Irish..... they "stated" the reason being that honour of the Crown were pledged to equally protect the Irish with the English usurpers. This introduction brought about the Irish laying down their arms which in turn brought about our ancestors being robbed, and persecuted in the most cold blooded way that could be done.

If any of you kow, and what I am wondering.. did the Irish know they were lying through their teeth? Did they believe them that the laws were a way to work things out without any more bloodshed? Or were they just trustful? Any insights or information on this of what made them lay down their arms?
