this is a great idea for dublin. free bikes that you can use for getting to work or just touring dublin. when you collect the bike you have to pay a deposit, but you get this back when you return the bike. how good is that.

dubliners will have a free bike scheme of their own early next year, it was confirmed today. labour councillor andrew montague said there would be 500 bikes at 25 stations in key locations across the capital.

The ballymun-whitehall representative said the success of the scheme in france and norway showed that people could be encouraged out of their cars.
the free bike scheme a commuter arriving at heuston station would be able to cycle to baggot street in about 15 minutes, he said, adding: "try doing that in rush hour. a computer system will keep track on who is using the bikes, and anyone who decides to throw their bike in the liffey will automatically lose their 150 euro deposit. that should deter even the most fool-hardy pranksters."

the councillor said there had been a mini-revolution in transport in dublin in recent times and cycling was making a comeback after many years of decline. "the number of cyclists has increased 25% since 2004. Initiatives such as the hgv ban reduced speed limits in the city centre and now bike lanes such as those in o'connell street are all having a positive impact," said mr montague. at the same time, he said, there had been a dramatic reduction in the number of injuries involving cyclists - down from over 300 ten years ago to 74 in 2005.
