Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     One woman One man .Marriage and divorce in Ireland

Not so long ago ...divorce of marriage was not an option in Ireland. Regardless of the individual circumstances ...marriage in Ireland was a lock-in for life.
Ireland has changed dramatically ....today divorce in Ireland is running at average European levels ....meaning that around half of all Irish marriages end long before death parts the married couple.
Single mothers and fathers in Ireland are no longer a rarity. For example ....in my daughters' school ....the majority of the children in her classroom ..have just one parent in the home ...some not knowing their own father as a parent. This cultural statistic is now common place across Ireland. I would not be shocked to find that most children born in Ireland this year ...were born to unmarried mothers.
Marriage in Ireland today is not yet irrelevant ...but it is definitively more aspiration than declaration. The cynic would classify the Irish marriage as ....a social event to please family.
The wedding day ...the dream of every young princess. What recent bad examples have we collectively shown to our children. A more recent bad example being ...the average cost of a wedding day in Ireland now a crazy €30,000.

Should marriage be encouraged when chances are ...it will be a waste of money at best for most. When over half of all marriages in Ireland will end prematurely ...and considering all the confusion and pain for the unit ...has the time now come ...that we adapt ..change ..pro-actively educate our children to aspire to something different than marriage.
Marriage is no longer fundamental to Irish society ...teachers can no longer realistically promote ...perhaps ethically promote marriage as the moral ...above another form of co-habitation.
Happily married, happily a parent ..but extremely confused at society.
