Beamish stout made by Cork Brewer Beamish & Crawford, has won the internationally renowned Gold Medal at the annual Monde Selection 2007 awards in Barcelona.
The Beamish & Crawford top selling stout secured the award for quality and excellence in the Beer and Soft Drinks category, beating off stiff competition from rivals throughout the drinks industry worldwide.
“We are delighted to have won the gold medal, one of the highest accolades awarded by the Monde Selection, which recognises the high-quality consistent brewing process of Beamish Stout. Beamish Stout is exclusively brewed in Cork and to be recognised internationally for our quality brewing process and taste, is a fantastic achievement. It is particularly special to us at Beamish Stout as it means we are meeting our consumers’ desire for a top quality brew.” said Beamish Brand Manager Thomas Brady.
The Beamish and Crawford brewery was founded in Cork, Ireland in 1792 by William Beamish and William Crawford. They purchased an existing brewery on a site that had been used for brewing since at least 1650 (and possibly as early as 1500). Alfred Barnard, a noted brewing and distilling historian, remarked in his book Noted Breweries of grate britain & Ireland in 1889 that "The business of Beamish & Crawford in Cork is a very old one dating as far back as the seventeenth century and it is said to be the most ancient porter brewery in Ireland". The brewery is situated in the heart of Cork's medieval city, close to the site of the city's South Gate.
In the domestic beer market, Beamish Stout is performing at 6% growth. Beamish & Crawford is the oldest porter brewery in Ireland. Its merchandised brands include Beamish Genuine Irish Stout, and Beamish Red Irish Ale. In addition to their own produce, they brew and distribute a number of internationally known brands of beer.
The Monde Selection Awards is an annual ceremony recognising quality and excellence in the beverage industry worldwide.
