Historic Poppies from Thomas Jefferson's Monticello

Nearly 20 years ago, excavations began of the old gardens at Monticello, home of Thomas Jefferson, based on his extensive diaries of everything that went on and everything that was planted during his lifetime. As all the rubble and tangle was cleared out, all kinds of things started coming up again - things that had flourished and bloomed over 200 years ago. Among them, these spectacular poppies.
For one season, seeds were sold, and then no more. A friend managed to get some seed and has been keeping them going ever since. Last year, she gave me some seed, and now I can keep them going.
They are quite beautiful, tall, with enormous flowers, and among the first things to bloom when the weather warms a bit. They're just about done here now, and when the pods you see in the picture dry out, they'll nod over and reseed the ground for next year.
