Brian Scully, youngest brother, is married, no children. He got into a tiff of some sort decades ago with somebody (not me) and just does not attend family functions.....save contact with Mom. He did offer me a kidney a year ago, was a match, but rejected at the end.
The rest of us all know he is fond of Mom, and deceased Dad. About 30 years ago, he bought 10 acres of useless land. On it is a three storey old chicken hatchery that he restored to spendor, just for recreation, it is huge, no chickens though. The land....he tapped Mom's farm roots from yesteryears and they often were known to just sit in lawn chairs watching things grow. He has made the land spectacular for many crops, and a 3-4 head of cattle. Mom lives in a senior condo project and Brian annually delivers gobs of produce to Mom and her friends, at no cost, of course.
When I was sick a year or so ago and in hospital for 30 days losing 30 pounds, and received the last rites, I woke up to see Brian at my side...and I had not seen him for about 25 years. We talked for about 2 hours, and he had to leave.
The rest of us (7) know Mom has no favorites, but that she gushes re Brian, her last. His 'farm' is a great place for Mom to visit and reminice, and she is taken there by others. That pic of barefoot Brian and Mom, hand in hand, says it all. If we don't see him, we know Mom does, and he her, and what could be better than that. Mom is 91 and 10 months old, and her eyes and hearing are starting to go, but her mind is like a steel trap. Brian has informed some of her musings from 1915 forward....pre-electricity, pre-inside rest room facilities, pre-automobile, all horses, how we were fed as youngsters, our grandparents, her ten siblings (3 left), and we all know Mom has missed Sunday Mass only two Sundays in her lifetime. It was a snow storm.
The long and short of it is that that picture is of two very lucky persons, brings tears to my eyes.
