Ancient sites and skeletons found in Clare

Skeletal remains dating back 2000 years ago have been found in county Clare. At least six humans dating back to pre-Christian times, were uncovered during improvement works to a local water network at Barnhill, near Newmarket-on-Fergus.

A further four possible adjacent burial sites, has since been discovered nearby the ancient Irish remains. The area where the find was made has now been cordoned off by Clare Co. Council pending the completion of further archaeological excavation work. This is an area of Clare renowned for its wealth of archaelological treasures, sites dating from the bronze age, early christian period and beyond. It includes several ancient Irish cooking and bathing sites known as Fulachta Fiadh, ring forts and Anglo Norman castles in the vicinity as well as the largest known hillfort in the country at Mooghaun, located in the grounds of Dromoland castle which dates back to 930 BC.
