Ireland are the bookies favourite for the grand slam in this years rugby six nations, and they have started to form. Ireland have beaten Wales in an open and thrilling RBS Six Nations clash in Cardiff by 19- 9.
Ireland scored three tries for no try reply by Wales. In the first half Rory Best scored first inside the opening minute, Captain Brian O'Driscoll scored the second, with Ronan O'Gara providing a superb long pass to catch the Welsh defence, but mistakes saw Ireland go in to the half with a slender 12-9 lead. The second half was a very tight affair, only the clinical finishing of Ireland saw them through this intense paced match. Still anyones match, with just a few minutes left to play, O'Gara went over himself for the final and crucial Irish try
Ireland looked solid but nervous, howver the much talked aout scrum weakness was not to be seen as Ireland held Wales in that department.
In Interview after the match, Eddie O'Sullivan, Ireland coach, said "Wales made it difficult for us but a lot of our problems came from our own errors, However, if you had offered me a win and three tries to none before the match I would have taken that. I am happy to get the result here. We made a lot of mistakes and I know we will have to move it up a notch if we are going to beat France in Dublin."
Possible injuries to Captain Brian O'Driscoll and Gordon Darcy are the downside to a successful start in the six nations Championship. Next Sunday sees Ireland face France at home, but not at Irelands traditional rugby home of Landsdowne Road, which is closed because of a new stadium being built. Irish sporting history will be made at Croke Park, which has been opened up temporarily by the GAA, for the first time to rugby union and soccer.
