In Scotland at Hogmany , thats New Years Eve , you go first footing , this is after the bells , you visit neighbours and family , you bring with you a lump of coal and some bun , this is to bestow always a warm fire and no hunger in the house , you always offer the host a drink from your bottle first , to welcome the new year , its luck if your first foot is a male and dark haired , dont ask why ...lol , everyone is expected to do a turn , meaning to sing recite poetry , or tell a story , this goes on into the wee small hours , or until sleep takes you over ...most people do manage it back to there own house , where New years day brings the visitors you missed earlier ...usually a big pot of soup or stew is made ..and offered to guests , served with lots of warm bread , oh and shortbread as well , for non drinkers thers the lovely ginger wine ...
