Sceala Irish Craic Forum Discussion:     St. Brigid's Eve

Just thought that I would share a bit with you about an old custom that I like to honor...on the night of January 31....known as St. Brigid's eve or Candlemas Eve, St. Brigid visits all homes...if you tie a red ribbon to your doorknob, when she touches it, it is imbued with her healing energy...and then thru the year, when you need her healing touch, you can tie the ribbon around the painful part of your body...you can also hang a shawl or blanket that is special to you (or you want to make more special) over the garden gate, the back of a chair on the porch or whatever in the moonlight if possible and this too can be charged with her healing energy if you wish..

BRIGID’S PRAYER

I shield myself from every harm,

With Brigid’s mantle soft and warm;

With Brigid’s candle crown alight

All shapes of shadow shall take flight

With Brigid’s staff of sacred wood,

All evil transform into good;

All that by Brigid’s girdle’s bound

Her protection shall surround;

In Brigid’s shoes I safely tread,

And sleep at peace in Brigid’s bed.

On St. Brigid's Eve...crosses from rushes gathered in local fields are made in preparation of the Patron Saint's Feast-Day, which occurs on Febuary 1st.

The St.Brigid's Cross is traditionally placed over the door to protect people from illness or bad luck. It was believed to help protect against fire, storm and lightening.

I posted the date past the eve (I need more sleep) although I had my ribbons out since yesterday...surely Brigid will still be on her rounds for the Patron Saints Day.

I'm going to have a drink on her behalf....the wine of health. drink
