Irish Language Forums Discussion:     Gabh mo leithscéal!

Gabh mo leithscéal! (pronounced - go-mo-la-schkael)

I have understood (self taught mind you) that the above meant excuse me ...but in looking elsewhere, it had the meaning of "sorry"...

Is there any one who can clear this up for me? How to use it ... where and when...

I know or believe it is to be used when hailing a waiter, or calling out to someone (stranger or otherwise) when trying to get their attention... but when and how else would you use it since it also means "sorry"??

Does it mean "sorry" as in I am sorry I hurt your feelings ...or something like that?

I'd appreciate someone's help with this...
