The time is coming to Shake Down The Thunder, again

It is a new time. New coach Charlie Weis is a ND graduate in 1978. He never played college football. But, he is a self-taught coach, and coached a high school team to a championship, then at a college, and early on was plucked to be a professional football coach. He is a genius with the X's and O's of the game. He presently is the offensive coordinator with the New England Patriots, champs of the NFL for 3 of the past 4 years. He is now come home. He has stated he will never coach anywhere else. Spirits are high.
He has quietly selected the cream of the crop of college and professional coaches to be his assistants. Some names are known, but all will be announced in a week or so. Some have been head coaches elsewhere, but are willing to work.......for him.....and for ND, and some are ND grads.
It is late in the recruiting season for new players. Most have already chosen a college to attend in the fall. Coach Weis will be with the Patriots for a few weeks yet and is doing double duty. He is on the phone with potential recruits constantly and is turning heads. Coach Weis could be the head coach of many pro teams just by asking to become so. Instead, he is coming home to ND.
In 24 months he will have the players he wants, and he can evaluate talent. For one, I expect that next fall the team will "begin" to show what Coach Weis can produce. He promises that his teams will be nasty, and that if the game is close in the 4th quarter, ND will win the games. The man drips with confidence, and it is catching on. The football coach position at ND is demanding. NOWHERE else will the pressures be more. Many have wilted and faded away. The media will be upon him. He seems up to the task. As his first press conference he was baited by many, and put them in their place, quietly. Every single ND game is on television, nation wide, and the games are broadcast via radio on over 300 stations. The press box at home games hold seats for more than 100 separate newspapers or networks.
ND grads are awake. Most of all, the subway alumni, including me, being those who follow ND but were never able to qualify to attend as a student, and their families, are quickly being regenerated. A ground swell is forming, much like a tsunami, and euphoria is rampant.
I invite all to just stop in South Bend, Indiana, at the campus the next time you pass by. Just wander the grounds, walk over to the practice fields, and stadium, the Basilica, the Golden Dome, and the hallowed grounds. You will catch the fever in no time just talking to the students, or parents milling around. Any day of the year.
