Counting Parents and first cousins in our family, there are 43 of us in number. Most of us are living in Ireland, mainly in Belfast, Armagh having most of the rest. On a family occasion, we have a good presence.
Until the 1980's, we would be a typical size of Irish family. Small families were once rare in Ireland.
Very large Irish families, such as Finns family with over a hundred first cousins, were rare, but not unique. That size of Irish family, where the extended family including children and grandchildren would number in the hundreds, would be very rare now, a feature of the past.
The big Irish family is a trend of the past. The traditional close knit Irish family unit is also on the decline. Estimates suggest that the current average size of the Irish family to be just 3, including parent(s).
These trends will result in the Irish family of native stock, being a ethnic minority in Ireland inside of this century.
